  1. How I first tried bitless bridles

    Posted on

I admit as a young rider, I didn’t consider bits and bitless much. My pony Paladin came with an eggbutt snaffle so that is what he wore, equally I was happy to ride him in a headcollar and often got told off for riding him round the village in a headcollar and bareback when we had just gone out for a walk.

Then when I was 18 I read Lucy Rees’ book Riding:The True Techniques. This book had a huge impact on how I rode and my relationship with my pony, not least was a photo of a boy on a pony in a Bitless bridle and the caption ‘some ponies are sensitive and don’t need a bit’ The lightbulb went on, I just had to try it.
